Ikebukuro is awash with fashion and in the last few years this part of Tokyo is re-inventing itself when it comes to stylish boutiques. Therefore, the opening of Miu Miu in the famous Seibu Department Store in late 2011 is mere confirmation that powerful boutiques view Ikebukuro in such a favorable light. This trend continues in 2012 and clearly this district is on “the fashion map” within Tokyo because of the buzzing fashion scene on both the east and west side.

It must be remembered that Ikebukuro train station is the second busiest in Japan and every week millions of people pass through this part of Tokyo. When this is added to the fact that Japanese people like convenience when it comes to shopping, then not surprisingly the fashion dimension within or around Ikebukuro train station is enormous. This reality means that the fashion area is a huge hub and Ikebukuro is also the gateway for people in Saitama prefecture.

Seibu Department Store and Tobu Department Store have a very rich history and both mega-companies, alongside Lumine, Marui, and Parco, are collectively creating a huge fashion district in Ikebukuro. Also, Esola is a lovely place for ladies fashion and you have scrumptious restaurants to eat.

In Esola you have exquisite boutiques which include Actuel, Amphi, Barbie Store, Beardsley Gallardagalante, Blue Bell Market, DouDou, Elleva, FRAMeWORK, Free’s Mart, Jolly Boutique, Muriel & Mercuria, Nuit et Jour Spick and Span, Opaque Clip, Royal Flash, and Turno Jeana.

Lumine, meanwhile, is one of the best fashion outlets in Tokyo and the store in Ikebukuro is a major attraction for Tokyo ladies because of lovely boutiques like SmackyGlam (Smacky Glam) and countless others. Also, the restaurant area in Lumine is a great place to relax and unwind.

Therefore, not surprisingly the fabulous boutique Miu Miu decided to open for business in Ikebukuro. While next year American Eagle Outfitters have also selected to open a store in this fashionable part of Tokyo alongside another store in the environment of Harajuku and Omotesando. This bodes well for the future of Ikebukuro because fashion is very dynamic in Tokyo and areas need to maintain their vibrancy.

In a past article by Modern Tokyo Times about fashion in Ikebukuro it was stated about American Eagle Outfitters that The new store will have three floors of fashion in order to attract the fashion conscious and the international aspect is an added dimension.  American Eagle Outfitters have clearly done their homework because Ikebukuro is a thriving fashion district in Tokyo and redevelopment projects are in the pipeline to further enhance the area.”

“Uniqlo also understands the reality of fashion in Ikebukuro because the future potential of this vibrant district is obvious.  Therefore, Uniqlo will expand their presence in Ikebukuro and this applies to occupying two floors in Tobu Department Store.”

Obviously the same applies to Miu Miu who decided to expand their international operations in the Seibu Department Store in Ikebukuro. Also, the store was designed by Roberto Baciocchi and like usual for Miu Miu they focus on classic concepts and futuristic aspects. Therefore, you can have a lovely shopping experience and envisage the creativity of this exquisite company by viewing the stylish layout and theme of the Miu Miu store.

In the last few years Lumine and Esola have altered the fashion landscape of Ikebukuro and complemented Seibu Department Store, Tobu Department Store, Parco, and Marui. Also, the opening of the Fukutoshin Ikebukuro train station created a new fashion hub in Ikebukuro. This applies to delightful fashion boutiques and other shops which have created a lovely underground hub once leaving the main Fukutoshin Ikebukuro train exit.

The recent opening of Miu Miu and the future opening of American Eagle Outfitters in 2012, alongside the expansion of Uniqlo, is maintaining the vibrancy of Ikebukuro. Therefore, while Ikebukuro might not get the same media exposure, the reality on the ground is very different because Seibu Department Store, Tobu Department Store, Lumine, Marui, Parco, Esola, and other fashion outlets, would enhance any fashion district.

Not surprisingly, Miu Miu and other fashion companies are aware of the ongoing changes in Ikebukuro and future projects which will enhance this part of Tokyo. Given everything, the future of this fashion district is rosy and the elegance of the fashion scene is growing because of the quality of so many exquisite boutiques.

Tokyo fashion vibes: views from ladies in Daikanyama and Jiyugaoka

Fashion in Tokyo is amazing and this survey applies to the areas of Daikanyama and Jiyugaoka. If you don’t know these areas then both places are extremely fashionable and you have many lovely boutiques. Also, the survey conducted is based on the age group of 18 to 30 and was taken at random.

Ladies involved in the survey all adore fashion and take great care about their style and image. However, the results are obviously limited because information collected came from 50 ladies and you must take into account the districts of Daikanyama and Jiyugaoka. Equally important, is the fact that each individual female was fashionable and this applies to mainstream fashion, independent but chic styles, and within the age group of 18 to 30.

If the same survey was taken in extremely exclusive fashion areas like Aoyama or questions were given to ladies who adore kawaii style clothing, then clearly the outcome would be very different. However, Daikanyama and Jiyugaoka represent extremely fashionable areas which are famous for elegance and modern styles. Also, both places are popular in Tokyo because you have an abundance of lovely boutiques and a nice elegant feel about these two trendy areas.

Before focusing on clothing styles it was interesting that the question related to “favorite hair salon” produced the biggest winner when it came to popularity. This applies to the fact that Shima was selected by 10% of all ladies interviewed. Therefore, it is clear that http://www.shima-hair.com/ Shima is hitting the right note for fashionable young ladies in Tokyo.

The question related to favorite shop and brand was extremely varied. However, while the majority of ladies selected a single favorite shop others mentioned their number one department store. Noticeable winners in the department store area were Marui, Lumine, and Isetan. Shibuya 109 and Harajuku Laforet were also selected and both places are icons within the trendy scene in Tokyo for younger ladies. However, Marui, Lumine, and Isetan, were selected many times and what was also noticeable is that four individuals selected both Lumine and Marui. Therefore, from this short survey it would appear that many young ladies see many familiar aspects about both stores which are extremely fashionable and highly respected.

Mercury Duo, Zara, Snidel, Topshop, Beams, Laguna Moon, Spick and Span, Ingni, Lowry’s Farm and G.V.G.V., were selected several times with regards to favorite shop and favorite brand. Overall, Mercury Duo was mentioned the most but it was very close and many other companies were selected. This applies to Forever 21, H & M, Gucci, Deicy, Louis Vuitton, Ships, Egoist, Jupiter, Polo Ralph Lauren, United Arrows, John Lawrence Sullivan, Liz Lisa, Sly, Free’s Shop, Stella McCartney, Osmosis, Journal Standard, Adam et Rope, Loungedress, Earth Music & Ecology, Lip Service, Smacky Glam (SmackyGlam), D’issy, Urban Research, Sister, Dazzlin, Miu Miu, Ryza, Jill Stuart, Jeffrey Campbell, Vivienne Westwood, A.P.C., Toga, Frayi D, Rosso, and a few others.

When it came to what people were wearing on the day then in the boots and shoes section, it was noticeable that Esperanza was highlighted four times by ladies in boots. Therefore, for four individuals to be dressed in these products from Esperanza does highlight that this company is popular and highly liked. Zara was also highlighted by two individuals.  However, overall apart from Esperanza being highlighted the most and Zara doing well, this area was extremely diverse and all the other companies mentioned were only stated once.

Dresses, blouses, and sweaters were put in the same category with regards to what ladies were dressed in on the day of the questions. Therefore, this section was simply the top half and companies that did well were Mercury Duo, Topshop, Dazzlin, Zara, Ingni, Earth Music & Ecology and Spick and Span. Other individual named companies that ladies were dressed in on the day applies to Ships, Kastane, Forever 21, Vivienne Westwood, Little New York, Double Standard Clothing, Beams, Tomorrowland, Polo Ralph Lauren, SmackGlam, Drawer, Free’s Mart, Spiral Girl, Moussy, Miel Crishunant, Ciaopanic, Loungedress, Jonathan Saunders, Lip Service, Laguna Moon, D’issy, and Yecca Vecca.

Once more, it is clear that ladies fashion in Daikanyama and Jiyugaoka is extremely diverse because boutiques mentioned were very varied. When it came to bags the same applied but Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Miu Miu, Yves Saint Lauren, Coach and Egoist were being used by several ladies on the day. Also, it would appear that exclusive bags are seen to be important for many young ladies and that many individuals are willing to pay more for this fashion item. Other companies mentioned include Wego, Forever 21, Loungedress, Celine, United Bamboo, Cher, Carlife, Titty & Co., Mark Jacobs, United Arrows, Samantha Vega, Tory Burch, Diesel, Ozoc, and Lowry’s Farm.

Questions related to music were also fascinating because it was evenly balanced between J-pop and Western music but K-pop was selected to be the favorite style by around 10% of all females asked. Therefore, it is clear that South Korean music is making inroads in Japan.

The findings may be limited to 50 individual Japanese ladies but some patterns can be seen. This notably applies to the diverse nature of fashion in Tokyo and that many ladies still take pride in their luxury bag. Also, Shima was popular when it came to hair salons and Esperanza was highlighted when it came to boots.

Overall, the streets of Daikanyama and Jiyugaoka highlight the competitiveness of fashion in Tokyo and that ladies have an abundance of stunning boutiques to pick from.

Lumine is a lovely company which caters for high quality fashion and certainly this company understands the market in Japan. Time after time when you visit different Lumine stores you are guaranteed to find exquisite boutiques, a lovely layout, nice ambience and sophistication. Therefore, amidst the hustle and bustle of dynamic Shinjuku you have Lumine 2 and other Lumine stores. However, this article is just focused on Lumine 2 and giving details about other famous fashion department stores in Shinjuku.

Shinjuku itself is blessed with so many fantastic department stores and stylish boutiques which cater for many different styles of fashion. At all times Shinjuku is awash with people and the atmosphere is electric for fashion lovers but at times it can be too hectic for others. Despite this, if you are a lover of fashion then the choice is amazing and Tokyoites and tourists flock to Shinjuku in vast numbers every day.

Major department stores in Shinjuku and Nishi Shinjuku include Lumine, Isetan, Marui, Keio, Mitsukoshi ALCOTT, Odakyu, Takashimaya and Mylord. Each quality department store provides exquisite fashion and visiting Takashimaya is a real eye opener to the elegance of fashion in Tokyo. However, for younger ladies then Lumine and other department stores like Isetan and Marui One are also extremely popular.

Mylord is part of the Odakyu group and provides a nice contrast with the main Odakyu store. Meanwhile Mitsukoshi ALCOTT and Keio have their own strong powerbase and collectively the fashion stores all add to a vibrant fashion zone. Therefore, fashion is clearly potent in Shinjuku and you can feel the raw energy of this famous part of Tokyo.

Also, if you want to feel the vibe of unique styles which makes the alternative fashion scene tick in Tokyo, then Marui One is a must. This department store took a more risky approach by focusing on “underground fashion” and the “unique vibes of Tokyo and Osaka.” Therefore, for fashion lovers who want to see unique styles and feel the buzz of Tokyo, then Marui One provides many lovely styles.

This applies to fantasy fashion, romantic designs, modern kimono, Gothic Lolita, Sweet Lolita, dreamy fashion, casual styles, visual kei, and other amazing trends. Therefore, Marui One is like “a mirror” of parts of Harajuku and this store is internationally famous. Marui have many different stores in Shinjuku but Mauri One stands out because of its individualism.  

Turning back to Lumine 2 then this elegant department store is blessed with exquisite boutiques and the atmosphere is always refined. Lumine 2 like all Lumine stores is based on providing boutiques which highlight elegance, current trends, gracefulness and extremely high quality products.

In Lumine 2 you have so many exquisite boutiques and on the second floor alone you have many fabulous fashion stores catering for ladies. This applies to Snidel, Banner Barrett, Jewel Changes, Samantha Thavasa, Grappe Bannister (Abahouse), United Arrows, Spick and Span (FRAMeWORK), Adam et Rope, Aquagirl, LANVIN en Bleu, Moroko Bar, Anteprima/Misto, Jill Stuart, Stunning Lure, KariAng Park, Fray I.D, Borny, Blondy, Peach John The Store (lingerie), RYZA, and several other lovely boutiques and cosmetic stores.

Spick and Span (FRAMeWORK) sums up the second floor well because this lovely boutique gives you a taste of the sheer quality provided within Lumine 2. Also, exquisite designs of bags by Samantha Thavasa and Anteprima/Misto are extremely appealing and the contrasting styles highlight the richness of the entire floor.

The second floor is the largest area for fashion but you also have stylish boutiques on other floors and it is important to look around and take your time. Therefore, on the third floor you will find a nice mix of ladies and men fashion and this applies to Urban Research, Nano Universe, Alfredo Bannister, and a few more boutiques.

The fourth floor is also mixed fashion for men and women and you have lovely boutiques which include Nombre Impair, Casbah, Beaver, Liptional, Journal Standard Relume, and Par ICI Klassisk. Also, you have other stores selling different products or a mixture of goods like Sunday Brunch Zakka (ladies fashion accessories), Raguel (ladies fashion accessories) and several other stores.

Overall, Lumine 2 is a fantastic shopping experience and if you want to see exquisite fashion in the heart of Shinjuku then you can’t go wrong by visiting this amazing department store.

The ultra-modern Skyscrapers in Shinjuku are a stark reminder of the economic power that emerged in Japan from the 1960s onwards until the bubble economy of the last twenty years.  However, in Tokyo it is hard to imagine that Japan’s economy keeps on going from small economic growth to stagnation and back to minor growth.

Therefore, when you arrive in Tokyo or if you are a Tokyoite it is abundantly clear that this city is dynamic and the environment is based on modernity, high octane shopping and despite the huge numbers of people the city keeps on ticking.

Amidst all the modernization are gems which remind you of the past and this is especially applicable to architecture, Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples.  Also, the stunning gardens are often linked to a rich history because each exquisite garden will have its own history and special factor behind the refined layout.

The huge skyscrapers in Shinjuku are amazing and the ultra-modern architecture is visually pleasing.  When I first visited Shinjuku I could imagine Blade Runner and this part of Tokyo made London and Manchester seem miniscule when it came to power and size.

Also, the shopping complexes are huge and you have many top notch fashion companies and department stores and the quality is exquisite in the upmarket part of Shinjuku.  Therefore, each different department store must compete and create its own image because the market is very competitive and the changing nature of fashion, thinking and lifestyles, means that department stores need to stay a few steps ahead.

Major department stores in Shinjuku and Nishi Shinjuku include Isetan, Keio, Lumine, Marui, Mitsukoshi ALCOTT, Odakyu, Takashimaya and Mylord.  Each department store provides quality of the highest and the service is second to none in the world and Japan is famous for this.  Therefore, you are certainly spoilt for choice in Shinjuku if you like exquisite shopping and of course you have so many different styles of shops and the area changes quickly and caters for a huge variety of goods.

It is unfair to pick any one individual company because they all have a wide selection of brands and I am more familiar with Lumine but also visit Odakyu and Keio often and my visit to Takashimaya was very pleasurable.  Also, I know that Isetan is widely liked throughout Japan and Mitsukoshi, despite setbacks in Ikebukuro after closing their store, is very different in places like Shinjuku, Nihonbashi and Ebisu. In truth, Ikebukuro clashed too much with the nature of Mitsukoshi and this department store is vibrant in Shinjuku. 

The Mylord complex is also a great place to relax and it is affiliated with Odakyu and during my early time in Tokyo it was my main place for hanging out in Shinjuku.

Marui One will appeal to fashion lovers because of the sheer diverse nature of this department store which caters for a whole spectrum of fashion.  This applies to catering for Tokyo fashion, fantasy fashion, modern kimono, princess fashion, casual styles, romantic designs, unique styles, Visual kei, Gothic, Lolita and dreamy fashion. 

Shinjuku train station is the busiest in the world and clearly you can imagine from this fact alone that central areas are awash with people.  Therefore, Shinjuku Gyoen is a welcome place to visit in order to escape the madding crowds, to take a welcome break from shopping or to visit only this part of Shinjuku. After all, the gardens are extremely beautiful and varied within Shinjuku Gyoen and I often just visit the gardens and have a quiet coffee and then return to more sedate parts of Tokyo.

Shinjuku Gyoen in history was an imperial garden but this changed after World War Two and it became a national garden with pre-eminence in Tokyo because of its prime location and the garden size is very large.

Within Shinjuku Gyoen you have three diverse styles and this applies to English landscape, French formal and traditional Japanese.  These distinct styles mix delightfully and the traditional Japanese tea house is an elegant feature within the gardens.

The whole park is a great place to relax and witness many stunning views and the ponds express the natural beauty in more detail.  Also, the three different garden styles mingle well within the whole complex and the pond areas are delightful and will lift up the spirits of all who view the natural beauty on display. 

The sheer size of Shinjuku Gyoen also means that you have many quiet areas and you can block out all the stresses of life.  Or if life is already going great then you will feel even better because you can spend hours by yourself or with friends and just enjoy your special day in such sublime and lovely surroundings. 

Overall, Shinjuku is full of energy and for tourists it is a must place to visit and the nightlife is very vibrant.
